OUR MIX:
The positive vibe of Disco resonates with us and this playlist represents the melody of our relationship. Each song has endless meaning in our lives and inspired the Last Dance Disco. We hope they’ll inspire you to dance the night away.
THE LIST:
You Make Me Feel Like Dancing - Leo Sayer
You Make Me Feel Like Dancing by Leo Sayer fits a feeling that we’ve felt for each other from the early days of our relationship - though neither of us are great dancers. That doesn't stop us from dancing the night away, literally or figuratively. This song was also part of a nice story with another song on this list.
Disco Inferno - The Trammps
As you may know, Summer and I met through our bike club. Disco Inferno by The Trammps is one of our favorite songs to listen to on the bike whether it be indoors or outdoors. It’s (probably) one of those songs that was played in workout classes back in the day. “Burn Baby Burn!” It inspired the name for our Disco Inferno Margarita, which will keep you moving all night long. This is the short version, but we recommend the 10 min original for cycling.
Everlasting Love - Carl Carlton
Going back to the bike, Everlasting Love by Carl Carlton came on once when we were riding our indoor bikes together (we sometimes bike side-by-side indoors.) It turned into a singing-along, karaoke ride with us belting out the lyrics. Won’t forget that one.
Waterloo – Abba
Abba won the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest with their upbeat performance of “Waterloo.” We have kind of a thing about the Eurovision Song Contest after watching that Will Ferrel movie sort of making fun of it. But we love Waterloo, and we love Abba - a quintessential name in Disco.
Time (You and I) – Khruangbin
Time (You and I) by Khruangbin is especially special. We were at a Khruangbin concert at Stubb’s back in 2021, a few months into our relationship and long before we were engaged. As an interlude they began rapid-firing short covers of famous disco songs. It was hype. Taken by the moment, Matt turned to Summer and said “If they play ‘You Make Me Feel Like Dancing’, I’ll propose to you right here and now.” Unfortunately, they didn’t play it, so the proposal had to wait a few months.
Never, Never Gonna Give Ya Up- Barry White
Most people think of Barry White as sexy time music. For us, this Barry White song came into our lives in a surreal way. We danced to this song with a pink robot woman, in a completely pink room, as the last course in a 2 Michelin star restaurant in Copenhagen. You had to be there; it’s hard to explain…
Heaven Must Be Missing an Angel – Tavares
Heaven Must Be Missing an Angel by Tavares is an obvious reference to Summer :) It’s another one of our favorite songs that gets it going every time. Summer loves it from the 2000 Charlie’s Angels remake where she aspired to be like Drew Barrymore’s character, but was prob a bit more Lucy Liu.
Don't Leave Me This Way - Thelma Houston
Don’t Leave Me This Way by Thelma Houston starts a fire in our souls. Always a great one with a gratifying crescendo.
You're The First, The Last, My Everything - Barry White
For Summer’s friends, they’ll probably remember this from the iconic bathroom dance number in Ally McBeal circa 2001. For everyone else, this song will hopefully be remembered as our first dance of the Last Dance, if we get our act together to practice. Light a cigar, sit by the fire and enjoy Barry’s smooth Barry-tones.
So We Won't Forget – Khruangbin
Khruangbin’s music is partially influenced by the disco era. So We Won’t Forget is no different and is another song that spreads the good vibes.
Night Fever - Bee Gees
Night Fever by Bee Gees was made popular by Saturday Night Fever starring John Travolta and his iconic finger-pointing-to-the-sky dance pose and all-white disco suit. We watched that movie in preparation for the Last Dance Disco because we hadn’t seen it before. We thought it would be all about Disco and dancing, but it’s actually a super dark story. We didn’t like the movie, to be honest, but there’s no way around it; this song IS Disco.
Love Train - The O'Jays
Simply great vibes. What’s not to love about joining hands and starting a love train? Love Train by The O’Jays is always playing in our house. Summer is triggered by this song from her days working at The GAP in the late 90’s when this song was on repeat in the store while customers were ruining her perfectly folded stack of polos.
Blame it on the Boogie - The Jacksons
Whatever happens at the Last Dance Disco, don’t blame on the sunshine, don't blame it on the moonlight, don't blame it on the good times… Blame it on the boogie.
Last Dance - Donna Summer
Finally, Last Dance by The Queen of Disco: Donna Summer. This song inspired the name for the Last Dance Disco, and, of course, it’s the last song on this list. The last song to end the night. The last dance before we are wed. So let’s get to the floor and dance this last dance.
